The Fastest WordPress Theme: We Measured 9 on the Same Post

Verdict: GeneratePress is the fastest WordPress theme you can use as it comes. On the same test post, it appeared 435 ms after the first byte on a throttled phone, against 1,090 ms for OceanWP. Hello Elementor tied at 430 ms, but it is built for Elementor, and with Elementor the same post took 966 ms.

Key takeaways

  • GeneratePress showed our test post 435 ms after the first byte on a Slow 4G phone. OceanWP took 1,090 ms.
  • Hello Elementor tied at 430 ms on its own. Built with Elementor, the same post took 966 ms and weighed 166 KB instead of 13 KB.
  • OceanWP loaded 21 files and 330 KB by default. Its own Performance options cut that to 107 KB, but it stayed last.

We didn’t copy speed claims from theme makers. We installed the nine themes on one clean WordPress site, showed the same post with each, and measured it ourselves. For the record, this site runs GeneratePress (with its paid add-on), and we have no affiliate deal with any theme.

The results

Five themes showed the post in under half a second: Hello Elementor, GeneratePress, Astra, Neve and Sydney (530 ms). The gap between the first four is under 55 ms, too small to notice. OceanWP was the only one over one second.

How we tested

Same site, same post, one theme at a time, default settings. Anyone can repeat it.

  • Site: WordPress 7.1.3 in WordPress Playground, no plugins, no demo import, no theme settings changed.
  • Themes: the free versions from WordPress.org, downloaded on 8 October 2026.
  • Page: a blog post with two headings, 12 paragraphs, a list and a quote. No images, so the theme’s files make the difference.
  • Browser: Chromium at phone size (390 px), slowed to a Slow 4G connection (150 ms latency, 1.6 Mbps) and a CPU four times slower. These are the numbers Google’s Lighthouse uses for its mobile test.
  • Server: each file was served compressed from memory, so the server’s own speed doesn’t count. That’s why we measure from the first byte.
  • Runs: 7 per theme, then 7 more in reverse order. The two medians were never more than 10 ms apart. Elementor and the tuned OceanWP below: 9 runs each.

A lab test shows what each theme costs on its own. Your real site adds plugins, images, fonts and hosting, which often weigh more than the theme. The scripts and raw results are in our research folder.

Why some themes are heavier

The slow themes load features the post doesn’t use. Here is what each file list showed.

  • OceanWP 4.2.7 loaded 21 files: 14 scripts (jQuery, a slider and a lightbox among them), 4 stylesheets, Font Awesome and a second icon font. The Font Awesome font alone is 155 KB.
  • Kadence 1.5.2 split its styles into 7 files and loaded a slider script for the related posts under the article.
  • Twenty Twenty-Five 1.5, WordPress’s default theme, loads a 52 KB font file (Manrope) and the scripts for its menu. The text appears early, then redraws when the font arrives, which is why it shows at 537 ms.
  • Astra 4.14.0 made the fewest requests (4) because it puts most of its styles inside the page itself: 92 KB of CSS in the HTML before compression.
  • GeneratePress 3.6.1 loaded one main stylesheet, a small one for comments and a 7 KB menu script. No jQuery, no icon font.
Page weight of the same post, compressed, without images: Hello Elementor 13 KB, GeneratePress 20 KB, Neve 26 KB, Sydney 33 KB, Astra 37 KB, Blocksy 42 KB, Kadence 54 KB, Twenty Twenty-Five 85 KB, Hello Elementor with Elementor 166 KB, OceanWP 330 KB
OceanWP loads 14 scripts, including jQuery, and two icon fonts by default: 330 KB, more than 16 times GeneratePress.

Hello Elementor: fastest alone, not with Elementor

Hello Elementor is the lightest theme here, but almost nobody runs it alone. Its readme says it “was built specifically to work seamlessly with the Elementor site builder plugin”.

So we built the same post with Elementor 4.3.4, also at its default settings. The page grew from 13 KB to 166 KB and from 5 to 23 files: jQuery, Elementor’s scripts and two Google Fonts families. It appeared at 966 ms instead of 430 ms.

If you use Elementor anyway, Hello is a lean base for it. If you don’t need a page builder, GeneratePress gives you the same speed with a full theme.

Can you make OceanWP faster?

Partly. OceanWP has a Performance panel in the Customizer, and every option in it is switched on by default.

We turned off emoji, Font Awesome, Simple Line Icons, the lightbox, custom selects and the scroll effect. The page dropped from 330 KB to 107 KB and from 21 to 13 files. It appeared at 982 ms instead of 1,090 ms: still the slowest of the nine, because jQuery and the 180 KB main stylesheet stay.

Installed size tells you little about speed. Astra is 21.5 MB unzipped and still loaded fast; GeneratePress is 2.6 MB and Hello Elementor 1.1 MB. What counts is what the theme sends to each visitor.

Which of these themes big sites use

Most big WordPress sites use none of these nine. We checked the 716 WordPress sites in the top 10,000 domains (Tranco list) and could read the theme on 528: only 48 use one of the nine.

  • Hello Elementor (22 sites): elementor.com, heroku.com and libsyn.com among them.
  • GeneratePress (13): matomo.org and ssl.com among them.
  • Astra (5): comodo.com. Kadence (3): liquidweb.com. Blocksy (3): plesk.com. Neve (1): themeisle.com, its maker.

We re-checked each named site by hand on 8 October 2026. Each one loads files from that theme’s folder, usually through a child theme.

Of 716 WordPress sites in the Tranco top 10,000: Hello Elementor on 22, GeneratePress on 13, Astra on 5, Kadence on 3, Blocksy on 3, Neve on 1, OceanWP on 1, Sydney and Twenty Twenty-Five on none
Only 48 of the 528 sites whose theme we could read run one of these nine. Hello Elementor and GeneratePress lead.

Which theme should you pick?

  • You want the fastest classic theme: GeneratePress, with Astra and Neve close behind (all within 46 ms).
  • You build every page with Elementor: Hello Elementor. The theme is not the slow part; Elementor is.
  • You want a block theme and the Site Editor: Twenty Twenty-Five is mid-pack at 537 ms. A 52 KB font file is most of its weight.
  • You already run OceanWP: turn off what you don’t use in its Performance panel before you switch themes.

A fast theme is one part of a fast site. Your SEO plugin adds its own weight too: see the best SEO plugins for WordPress, with their speed measured.

What to do next

  1. Test one post on your site with PageSpeed Insights on mobile and note the Largest Contentful Paint.
  2. See what your theme loads: open the post, then the Network tab in your browser’s developer tools, and filter by your theme’s folder name.
  3. Running OceanWP: switch off what you don’t use in its Performance panel in the Customizer, then test again.
  4. Switching themes: do it on a staging copy first. Customizer settings belong to each theme and don’t carry over.
  5. Then check your plugins. In our test, Elementor added more weight than any theme except OceanWP.

GeneratePress, in our test of nine free themes on the same post: it appeared 435 ms after the first byte on a Slow 4G phone and weighed 20 KB. Hello Elementor tied at 430 ms on its own, but took 966 ms once the post was built with Elementor.

Is Astra faster than GeneratePress?

No, but it’s close. Astra showed the post at 468 ms against 435 ms for GeneratePress, and weighed 37 KB against 20 KB. A 33 ms gap is too small for a visitor to notice.

Is Hello Elementor the fastest theme?

On its own, yes: 430 ms and 13 KB. It is built to be used with Elementor, though, and with Elementor 4.3.4 the same post grew to 166 KB and 23 files and took 966 ms.

Is OceanWP slow?

It was the slowest of the nine: 1,090 ms, 330 KB and 21 files at its default settings. Turning off the options in its Performance panel cut the page to 107 KB, but it still took 982 ms.

Is the default Twenty Twenty-Five theme fast?

It sits in the middle: 537 ms and 85 KB. Most of that weight is one 52 KB font file (Manrope); the text appears first, then redraws when the font arrives.
